Life of your Laptop

Just last week Intel launches a new series of ‘Metro Notebook’ that is one quarter inch thicker then the Motorola Razr.

The speed at which the Notebook is getting sleeker day by day, it wont be a surprise if someday we will have Notebook the size of Nokia N95 cell phone. Image yourself carrying Dell, Compaq, IBM or HP Notebook in your pocket with 120 GB HDD space and Intel Duo core processor. I wish I could get such Laptop from Dell or IBM soon. As we try to handle different things in our daily life we always ignore to take care of our computers or Laptops.

In this article, I would like to talk about some tips to keep your Notebook in the best working condition.

• Never expose your Notebook to direct sunlight for more then 15 mins.
• If you are using your Notebook as a desktop machine, it’s better to attach an external keyboard and mouse. This will increase the life of your keypads.
• Make sure that the outer air vents are free of dust. This helps in providing better cooling to the Notebook processor and HDD.
• The LCD of Notebook should be cleaned with non-abrasive cloth or soft towel. Avoid using Newspaper and plastics to clean your LCD
• The Notebook batteries should be charge/discharge periodically to get better longer battery life and better performance. Also configure your power settings to shut off the display after 5 minutes of inactivity.
• Run Disk Defragmenter once in a month. Doing this will give access to your documents much faster.
• Use the best quality carry bag, preferably a leather one that the Notebook manufacturer supplies with the Laptop.
• Use the diagnostic tool that comes with the Notebook to detect any defect in the Notebook at least one in two months.
• Always go for extended warranty. This saves lot of money in case you have a Hardware issue with you Notebook.

There are many more tips to keep your Laptop in great condition but I think that you need to tell me by giving comments.

Hi Stella,
This one is for ABIR. Global warming is caused by accumulation in the atmosphere of gasses like carbon dioxide, chloro fluro carbons (CFC), methane etc. The effect is very similar to what you see in a green house (a house made of glass for growing plants) It lets the sunrays in but traps the infrared rays making the house hotter. The same thing happens in the earth’s atmosphere. Now in order to control global warming you have to know what is the source and what is the sink. The source of CO2 is mainly from the burning of fossil fuels, coal, wood etc.. With progressive industrialization we have been progressively emitting more and more CO2 into the atmosphere. On top of that you have emission from cars and other vehicles. The major sink for carbon dioxide is our forests as the trees absorb carbon dioxide and liberate oxygen. The major sinks are the Amazon forests and other major forests like in the Philippines. So you can understand why it is imperative to limit our carbon dioxide emissions and go in for reforestation. I can ramble on and on about why it is so difficult to implement but I will limit myself for now.
About CFC, this is a refrigerant usually used in our refrigerators and other cooling devices. All major appliance manufacturers have now shifted to CFC free refrigerants. Methane is produced in marsh gasses and is a normal metabolic product in most animals. So ABIR you can rest assured your mobile and laptop is not going to heat up the world.

As to the sleek phones and laptops there are two areas of research, which might be of interest to us. One is the production of 3D circuitry in polymers. With the help of this technology in the not too distant future you may be able to roll up your flat screen TV when not in use or fold your laptop into your pocket. The second line of research is on room temperature super conductors this should take care of the limitation on micro miniaturization due to over heating. The third probably more in the future is to use the sub atomic properties of atoms.

Guys please correct me if I have made some lapses here and there as I am not updated on these fields.

hi
your comments are good but these type of comments will be useful to those who own a laptop but what i think is that you must concentrate on the current users who use a desktop or even users who like to switch over to laptops. Frankly speaking many users dont know the benifits of usng a laptop compared to a desktop. You can also give the the trendy laptops that are in the market and the best choice. this will realy help them a lot to chose a state of the art laptop.

STELLA,
IT IS POSSIBLE TO MINIATURIZE THE NOTEBOOK SIZE AND SOONER THAN LATER YOU ARE GOING TO GET IT IN THE MARKET. THERE WON'T BE ANY DIFFERENCE IN CELL PHONE AND NOTEBOOK. THE SIZE OF THE SCREEN AND THE LENGTH OF THE SENTANCES WILL GO DOWN CONSIDERABLY. ALL THOSE WHO PUT ON GLASSES MAY NOT BE ABLE TO READ LOWER PHONT CHARACTERS ON THE SCREEN. MANY OTHER FEATURES WHICH ARE PRESENTLY AVAILABLE MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE WITH THE NEW MINIATURIZED NOTEBOOK.

Laptops and Laptops that is what I've been seeing since last couple of years from when the laptop have become cheaper and cheaper????
But still not so affordable to the "Common Man"

It does provide the convenience of computing mobility but what matter is the battery life and kind of care that you need take for these types of machines. Also the after sales service and the cost of spares for such hi-tech gadgates is very expensive.

Our standard Desktop is the best and the most preferred computing equipment.

If laptops become more common like the mobile phones there would be no privacy and any body can bother you any time they want irrespective of the fact whether you want to attend it or not.

At times we need our own space because the technology is getting too much into the presonal life of the Human Being and spoiling it.

Yes, Notebooks are getting sleeker AND more powerful as well.

Recently I sold off my HP nx 9010 and got the HP Pavillion DV6137 TX. It has an Intel Core 2 Duo, 1 GB RAM, 120 GB and 256 MB NVIDIA GEFORCE Card on it !!! Wow ! That's some serios GIG we're talking about...

I mean, these configs weren't available in a PC some years ago...and you've to see the Display to believe them...

Surely tech is rocking these days...I love to keep in touch with the same...Computers, Software, Mobiles et all...

Some more tips for Laptop Care (compiled from various sites):

1) Never leave laptop unattended
2) Never loan out laptop, cords, disks or software to others
3) Know where your laptop is at ALL times
4) Do not disassemble any part of your laptop or attempt repairs
5) Do not place decorations on laptop or bag
6) Keep laptop off the floor
7) Shut laptop down before moving it
8) Do not walk around with laptop open and running
9) Recharge batteries daily
Do not carry books or supplies in laptop case with laptop
10) Follow Acceptable Use Guidelines in and out of school
11) Clean monitor with a soft damp cloth
12) Use pressurized air to clean keyboard
13) Keep food and beverages away from laptop

GENERAL PRECAUTIONS
===================
1. Try to not touch, sneeze, splatter liquids, etc. on the screen. The screens are fragile and can get scratched or distorted. DO NOT USE WINDOW CLEANERS OR TOWELS TO CLEAN. If you do get marks, smudges, dust, etc. on the screen wipe carefully with a LCD cleaner. These are available at the help desk in the library lab. The Lab people use Kensington Screen Guardian and Dust Off Monitor Wipes.
2. Try to always carry your laptop in a backpack, carry bag, etc that has a protective pocket or make your own protective pocket with bubble wrap, foam rubber, etc. Try to use a bag that is not an obvious computer bag that would welcome thieves.
3. The laptops have been set to automatically update CSUBS’s antivirus and security programs—make sure you bring the computers to school and connect to the wireless network at least once per week to have the anti virus program and Windows updates automatically occur.
4. Set your computer to show file extensions so that you can avoid file types you know that have been identified as possible problems.

COMMUNICATING
==============
5. Avoid virus, spyware, etc. by communicating only with those you know with IM (AIM, Yahoo Messenger, etc.)
6. Only open email messages that you have confidence are from a legitimate source, those you are expecting an attachment from and the content and purpose are described in the message. With new techniques hackers and spammers have been able to send messages using addresses that seem to be from legitimate sources (friends, banks, Ebay, companies you do business with, etc.) The best policy is to delete any suspicious message.
7. To avoid adware or spyware watch out for unwanted components while installing programs especially freebies. Some legitimate companies may also try and install programs that allow access to your personal information and possible hacker access [Sony]. If new programs unexpectedly show up on your taskbar or browser toolbar you have probably been stung by adware or spyware—check with the CSUB Help desk.
8. Browse more securely by using the browsers security and refusing to install Active X controls that web sites ask you to download (check this web page http://www.find.pcworld.com/40904 for specifics)

WEB BROWSING
============
9. Don’t accept any request from a web page that says you need to download a file in order to view a specific web page. We have installed all the major components (Acrobat Reader, QuickTime, etc.) on your computer so a request like this has a have high probability of being adware, spyware or a Trojan horse that allows others to access your computer and possibly even turn your computer into an illegal server.
10. Avoid “free” music and video downloads. There is some legitimate “free” music and video shorts but the illegal sites often install nefarious programs on your computer and downloading from these sites violates copyright laws and makes you and CSUB responsible. Use Apple, Wal-Mart, etc. pay music web sites to download music. Remember if it sounds “too good to be true” it is likely not true! Ask your instructor if in doubt about a site.
11. To prevent adware, spyware, etc:
a. Change Windows Media Player settings to give more warning: Select Tools/Options/Privacy and turn off Acquire Licenses Automatically for protected Content. The result is you are asked to approve acquiring a license and the URL displayed—if in doubt you can choose “No”
b. Set your browser to prompt you before downloading Active X controls. In IE choose Tools/InternetOptions/Security and click “Custom Level” then choose appropriate options
c. Set your browser to block pop-ups. In IE choose Tools/InternetOptions/Privacy and click by “Block pop-ups”
d. Turn on automatic Firewall and Windows updates
Open the Security Center, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Security Center.
Make sure Firewall and Automatic Updates are both selected
